Why is collagen important?

I had no idea why collagen was important for our bodies and that as we get older, we lose it. So, what is collagen and why is it important to supplement our bodies with it? I will be taking excerpts from different articles and touching on some main points.

As the most crucial protein in the human body, collagen is a structural protein that makes up around 25-35 percent of your body's total protein content. Collagen serves as the main component of your bones and connective tissues and can be found in your skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, teeth, bones and blood vessels.

Your body's ability to produce protein naturally declines as you age. In fact, this decline can start occurring as early as the age of 25. Once it begins, your collagen levels typically decrease at a rate of 1.5 percent each year. By the time you reach the age of 40, your body will begin expending more collagen than it can produce. That's why one of the best ways to maintain optimal collagen levels is to consume lab-verified collagen peptides.

Collagen is found in connective tissue, skin, tendons, bones, and cartilage. It provides structural support to tissues and plays important roles in cellular processes, including:

  • tissue repair
  • immune response
  • cellular communication
  • cellular migration, a process necessary for tissue maintenance

Connective tissue cells called fibroblasts produce and maintain collagen. As people grow older, their collagen becomes fragmented, fibroblast function becomes impaired, and collagen production slows. These changes, along with the loss of another key structural protein called elastin, lead to signs of aging such as sagging skin and wrinkles.

Finding out a lot of these signs, I decided to check into what is the best to start replacing it. I also, figure I'd start giving it to my 93 yr. old Dad to help strengthen his bones, as we know, too many elderly fall and break a hip and then it's hard for them to recover.

I did my research and found that a bovine collagen with the amino acids and type 1 & 3 are the best to help replenish. But the funny thing about this, I started making an oil and cream that the natural oils I use, help replenish your collagen to help with sagging skin and wrinkles.

I figure it's never too late to get started on fighting the issues when we start to lose collagen. As a matter of fact, I'm getting my daughter going on this so that she can maintain the important collagen our bodies produce.

I've always had bad knees (and a bad back) and hearing the creaking in my knees kept getting worse. Since being on the collagen peptides, the creakiness in my knees is diminishing and I feel I have more energy.

I know there's a lot more articles out there, so do some research and read more about it and why it's important to maintain your collagen levels.

We all grow older but there's no reason we can't fight the signs of aging.

Stay young my friends,
